Serapis the grain-god of Ptolemaic Egypt was a synthetic, syncretic deity formed of a couple of handfuls of Osiris, a couple of handfuls of Ares/Mars, a handful or two of Zeus/Jupiter, and a smidgen of Apollo. The result was a harvest deity who commanded the people of Egypt to pay tribute in wheat and flour... which later Roman Emperors weaponized against the Senate to achieve total control over the empire, the Mediterranean, and the known world. It's hard to say how people will behave when they know you can cut off their food supply, their water or their energy. What are you eating in this time of abundance?
