This is the Sun in The Pyramid, which is a season associated with oppression, and with oppressive behaviors. Many find that this season involves the awareness that they are themselves subject to oppression from those above them in the social order; and all too aware of the ways in which they themselves subject others below them to the same sorts of oppression. We're caught in the weight of 'the system', unable to rise above our current position and role without oppressing more of those beneath us; and we're unable to shift our role without finding the new weight and constraints of those above us to be insufferable.

The New Moon today, at 5:49 pm, occurs in this self-same decan, and in the Twenty-Third Mansion — which promises both escape from limitations, and diminishment or wasting force. It's hard to face the possibility of declining status, loss of fame and dignity, or diminished wealth... and yet these are exactly what we're being warned about in this coming cycle

It's also a decan ruled by Mars, currently retrograde and inconjunct in Leo — but about to cross into Cancer on January 7, where he'll be in opposition and in exile. Career matters and reputation are about to get bumpy, and home and family life may be expected to carry burdens they're not used to bearing: the donkey of the new year may turn out to be a recalcitrant and rebellious ass

The Sun enters Scorpio I tomorrow at 6:15 pm on October 22, 2024 — and stays there until 1 November in the early evening, for just a little over 10 days and 20 minutes. This is the home of the Nymphs, the 'feminine' spirits of naturally beautiful places and placid groves and springs.... who are also the teachers of the useful arts and crafts to mortals. It's a good week to get out your sewing needles, your saws and planes, your knitting needles, and to produce work.

This year, it's also the decan in which Halloween occurs — although technically the evening of All Saints and All Souls, on November 1 and 2, will occur in Scorpio II. That's when Dia de los Muertos is usually celebrated in Mexico, of course... and it's worth thinking of this ten days as the "countdown" to the season of the dead that begins at Samhain/Halloween... on or about October 31-November 1... rather than the season of the dead itself.

The Sun enters Cancer II on 1 July 2024 at 4:31 am EDT. Called "The Walled Garden" it was a time associated with the divine Hercules and with the planet Mercury. We tend to think of Hercules as the muscle-bound warrior, but this is instead the cross-dressing grizzled veteran shaving his beard and living as a woman in order to atone, and heal from, the PTSD of his battlefield experiences at the behest of the Oracle of Delphi. If even the greatest heroes can suffer mental breakdown — if even the most famous achievements of legend can wound the heroes who did them — maybe we owe it to ourselves to heal the wounded, and give the anguished the tools and techniques for their own well-being.

Gemini III begins early tomorrow morning 10 June 2024 on the US east coast, with the Sun just peeking over the horizon at 5:33 am EDT. This season, called The Executioner’s Sword, is associated with Praxidike (possibly Persephone Praxidike, the arbiter of justice requiring capital punishment), and is administered by the Sun under Mercury.

Sagittarius III, as we've discussed in the past, is the season of Anangke "the goddess of the gods" who defines and designates all that simply must happen. As Necessity, she watches over all events that simply must occur whether the gods wish them to or not. Largely not worshipped by ordinary mortals, she nonetheless points to the idea that larger realities must sometimes simply be accepted for what they are and how they act upon us. Some events, no matter how catastrophic or blessed, or even out of the gods' hands.

We're supposed to learn new craft, new artisanry, new skill, from our observations of such places — Austin Coppock called this part of the sky The Jawbone, while T. Phobos was the ancient Greek god of panic on the battlefield. Shown as a strong man with a lion's head, he was less to be worshipped than propitiated ... through practice and training. You could not escape his clutches once the conflict started and the battle was joined — your only hope lay in what you had learned to do in the gymnasium and on the stadium grounds or on the fields of Mars just outside a city's walls. May we be free of the influence of Phobos in the next ten days and the next year, and remain safe by virtue of our training and practice.

At 3:30 am EST on 20 January 2023, the Sun entered Aquarius I "The Mark of Exile", where Dike the goddess of responsibility and justice dwells. Less inclined to capital punishment, she offers critique and retribution through fines, fees, community service, and tasks that feel odious like jury duty or community kitchen clean-up. And yet, without her presidency, the world of our social responsibility to one another collapses. How are you upholding your duty to her? How are you failing to heed her warnings? In any lifetime, some such responsibilities fall to us.
