Themis, the goddess of custom and procedure (and the parliamentarian of the assembly of all the gods, how's that for a title!?) rules the ten days that begin this morning. Where must we follow the strictest procedures, even against our best judgement? Where must older custom give way to more modern experiences?

The Sun enters Cancer I at the moment of Solstice, at 10:58 am EDT today. What victories do you show gratitude for? How do you celebrate what you create in the world?

Capricorn II, dedicated to Hygeia, begins tomorrow at 12:19 pm EST  Austin Coppock called the decan "The pyramid" and T. Susan Chang notes its associations with the three of pentacles — a time for cleaning up, and structuring a vision for a project that you know you cannot achieve alone.  This year for your New Year's Resolutions, don't ask, "what goal am I setting for myself?" Ask instead, "Who are my partners in the work we want to do together?" https://andrewbwatt.com/2022/12/30/sun-in-capricorn-ii-hygeia/

The Sun enters Scorpio III on 12 November at 5:16 am EST — the realm of Kairos, or opportunity. What openings have suddenly appeared in your life? What chances is it time for? where are you rushing to grab something? Where will you act despite consequences?

At 1:45 pm EDT, the Sun enters the middle decan of Aries, called THE CROWN. Administered by the Sun and associated in ancient times with the return of Persephone from the underworld, it's the place and time where the green ones start to emerge from their winter rootstock and seed, and begin to flourish. Several indicators in the chart promise a troubled and reactionary ten days, though, where we must respond to ongoing turbulence rather than make our own plans. Be flexible and open to shifting circumstances; don't blithely plow ahead regardless of changing conditions.

Tolma isn't exactly a goddess or a deity. She's more like an extended metaphor: the personification of "audacity" or "daring", which some ancient sources credited as "the virtue of gods and the vice of mortals." Great achievements don't come without risk, and neither do small ones. SOmetimes you just have to get up and do, no matter how fretful you may be about the consequences. The results are often far more than the imagined risk it took to achieve. https://andrewbwatt.com/2021/11/15/sun-in-capricorn-iii-tolma/

Anangke is the deity of the deities — she's called a word that means "necessity", and is the set of forces that even the gods must obey.  She lives beyond the cosmos, and her actions shape and re-shape the world.  In other words, even the gods have cosmic horror, and are aware that there are forces and powers which even they must obey.  How do we recognize or understand that even the gods operate under constraint?  How does this affect our comprehension of our relationship with them?  https://andrewbwatt.com/2021/12/11/sun-in-sagittarius-iii-anangke/

The Sun arrives in Virgo III tomorrow morning 12 September 2021 at 9:20 am EDT.  The ancient Greeks of Alexandria in Egypt regarded this as the start of a festival of Hestia, the goddess of the hearth of Olympus — and in a sense, the keeper of the entire 'household of mortals', the human realm that is neither field and garden (belonging to Demeter) nor the private innermost rooms devoted to the mysteries of sex, pregnancy, birth, and death (which belonged to Hera).  Everything else belonged to Hestia: homestyle kitchen and roadhouse diner, the bistro on the square and café on the side street.  Wherever food, men, women, and life intersect, there Hestia's interests are well represented, and the goddess watches over mundane activities: the discussion of politics and economics, the actual work and labor that makes politics and economics possible, and the social order that lets men and women interact in ways that have nothing to do with sex and sexuality.   It's an important role and time, where the individual dies — but society as a whole touches on eternity.

Sun in Leo I — 22 July '21, 10:26 am EDT, the Sun enters the smithy of Hephaestus, and Saturn and Sun contend for mastery of the next 10 days, neither able to outsmart or overpower the other. Expect equilibrium for now & find grace in companionship. https://andrewbwatt.com/2021/07/20/sun-in-leo-i/

(I usually post columns on the day before - this one is 2 days before because I got stuff to do tomorrow).

Praxidike is the goddess of justice-in-practice, a difficult ancient Greek concept that closely connects both community fairness and familial vengeance in strange ways. The next ten days are hers in the decanic calendar of ancient Alexandria, which has complicated effects on tomorrow's eclipse (June 10, 2021)

Starting today 30 May 2021 at 3:37 pm EDT, the Sun passes into Gemini I, the realm of Tethys the goddess of the sea. Fundamentally uninvolved and uninterested in the lives of mortals and largely ignoring their worship, she reminds us that most of our schemes and politics are of little interest to gods. Accordingly, we must cultivate our own inner life in pursuit of our larger aims — working on our hearts, mnds and souls with the same attention as we pursue bank account increases and larger houses. We cannot neglect that work and expect profitable results.

Taurus III begins at 6:46 am EDT on 10 May 2021 — the season of the Litai, or the prayers. For some ancient Greeks, the prayers were spirits that either flocked around us when we engaged in either extemporaneous or rote prayer; or beings that literally came into existence the moment that we spoke aloud a thought to the gods. Their presence around us drove off Ate, or Ruin, a goddess or daemon of terrible nature. Patience, graciousness, and deliberateness are the virtues that the Litai allegedly cultivate within us — how will we make use of those virtues in the next ten days?

The Horae, or Seasons, rule the next ten days. In Rome they were named Ceres, Flora, and Pomona: Grain, Flowers, and Fruit; in Argos, Athens and Olympia they answered to Eunomia (a pun meaning both 'good order' and 'green field'), Dike (Justice), and Eirene (Peace). Yet in every case they represented the essentials of a fair society: a balanced diet in the belly and a balanced attitude in the mind and heart. "Wine, Women and Song" is just a fancy way of saying that you have time to party because there's food and drink in the pantry, and time enough to relax and party. Try to remember, though, that there's an undercurrent of dignity that is the foundation of that celebration: food and intoxicants and free time are only possible in a society that accepts that all Seasons have their proper place and time. (an earlier version of this column cited Charis as the deity of thee ten days; that was an error).

Charis or Aglaea, one of the three Graces and a goddess of feast and festival, of charm and wit, administers April 19-29. Said to be Hephaestus's second wife, she holds the possibility of making peace with the past while seeking a a happier future. What do you need to reconcile? How will you find your way forward?

Kairos, the lord of the right moment, rules over the next ten days. So does the concept of desire: what do you really want? How will you know when you have it? Are you sure that's what you want? Not all goals can be pursued in the same lifetime, much les the same ten day period. Don't expect desire to be rational, but recognize when it serves you... and when you serve it.
