The Horae, or Seasons, rule the next ten days. In Rome they were named Ceres, Flora, and Pomona: Grain, Flowers, and Fruit; in Argos, Athens and Olympia they answered to Eunomia (a pun meaning both 'good order' and 'green field'), Dike (Justice), and Eirene (Peace). Yet in every case they represented the essentials of a fair society: a balanced diet in the belly and a balanced attitude in the mind and heart. "Wine, Women and Song" is just a fancy way of saying that you have time to party because there's food and drink in the pantry, and time enough to relax and party. Try to remember, though, that there's an undercurrent of dignity that is the foundation of that celebration: food and intoxicants and free time are only possible in a society that accepts that all Seasons have their proper place and time. (an earlier version of this column cited Charis as the deity of thee ten days; that was an error).
